Church of the Nativity of the Virgin

Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin in Rostov - one of the recognizable contours of the landscape line of the city and the most visited religious building. It is located on the Cathedral Square, in the city center.

In 1761, on the southern state border, the construction of the fortress began, and at the same time the erection of the church and the wooden chapel of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin. Soon the latter received the status of a temple. In 1781, he was dismantled and moved to the trading area. After 10 years, it burned down, and in 1795 a new stone church appeared in its place. By the middle of the XIX century, he had ceased to accommodate believers, and the Rostov merchants took the initiative to build a new church on their personal funds. The Holy Synod approved their request. Construction started in 1854 and was completed in 1860. The author of the project was Konstantin Ton.

After the revolution of 1917 the cathedral with the bell tower was surrounded by a fence. Soon the gradual cracking of utensils and furniture began, and in 1929 the last icon was removed. Until 1942 the cathedral was closed and completely ruined. Inside, a grain depot was made, and a zoo was set up in the yard.

In 1942, believers in Rostov, while still in occupation, opened the cathedral, and in 1951, after the war, they established an iconostasis. In the late 1980s the domes were gilded and covered with copper.

In 1999, the restoration of the bell tower was completed.

You can get to the cathedral by tram or taxi. The famous Rostov embankment is 10 minutes away on foot.
